There's been a lot of talk lately, maybe too much talk... nah, here's a round up of the last month or so of Refuge Recovery and Recovery Dharma coverage.
From Trike Daily at The Tricycle: Buddha Buzz Weekly: Refuge Recovery Splits By Karen Jensen and Matthew Abrahams JUL 13, 2019 From Los Angeles Magazine: Noah Levine Blames the #MeToo Movement for the Demise of His Punk Rock Buddhism Empire By Sean Elder -July 10, 2019 At The Fix: Ben Affleck Clarifies Support For Refuge Recovery's Noah Levine Amid Misconduct Allegations By Victoria Kim 07/10/19 From TMZ: Exclusive: BEN AFFLECK - MY RECOVERY GURU SAVED MY LIFE 6/28/2019 3:49 PM PT Remember, links to the RefCon5 State of the State video, the Recovery Dharma [RD] statement, the first complete draft of The Recovery of Dharma - the RD book, and a proposed RD meeting format are all posted in Resources. See ya in the funny papers... Today, the administrator for the Facebook group, Refuge Recovery Group Resources was sent a C&D [Cease and Desist] from the attorney representing Noah Levine and Refuge Recovery World Services [RRWS] that read in part:
Your use of the Refuge Recovery Group Resources page to promote RD amounts to trademark infringement in relation to the name, "Refuge Recovery." You need to do one of the following right away: (1) stop promoting RD on that page and delete any such promotions or references to RD, or (2) turn over the page to RRWS, or (3) take down the page. Otherwise we'll start the process of litigation to get an injunction and recovery attorney's fees and statutory damages and costs from you. RR the non-profit has a license until August 1 to use the RR name, but my understanding is that your page is not owned by the non-profit and will not be turned over to RRWS on Thursday like all of the official RR pages. Please correct me if I am wrong. As that attorney is working pro bono and apparently has unlimited time and resources, which I do not, I think I have no choice but to immediately rename this informational website from Refuge Recovery Phoenix to Recovery Dharma - Phoenix Rising. Within the next week, I'll be removing any and all material trademarked to RRWS. I will also, by August 1st, be removing listings of any RRWS affiliated meeting. Those meetings will continued to be listed on the national website and, of course, IF you have their permission, you can create your own website for them. I say IF because my impression is that the entire infrastructure for RRWS will be very hierarchical with orders, etc. coming from the top down. Please note: my changes to this website do not change the names or affiliations of any individual meeting here in Phoenix or Arizona. Each meeting will need to decide its affiliation for itself. I will be happy to list any Recovery Dharma meeting in Phoenix - or the state of Arizona here; just let me know. -Catherine Rezza Message from Jean Tuller, Executive Director of Refuge Recovery
Hi sangha!! Here's the updated info for the online Recovery Dharma Town Hall this Thursday. Please use the below info to join and share your ideas and hopes. Thanks and look forward to seeing you this Thursday!!! A new non-profit called Recovery Dharma [RD] has been created to support the Refuge Recovery groups who wish to no longer be associated with Noah Levine and his private businesses. Another organization led by Noah Levine called Refuge Recovery World Services [RRWS] will soon take control of Refuge Recovery's website, meeting and mailing lists, official Facebook pages and groups. This will not include any website's - such as this one- or FB groups created by private individuals, existing individual meetings or intersanghas, etc. Meetings such as those of ours in the Phoenix metro area will each decide what to do next - whether that be joining the Noah Levine led RRWS, or the non-profit collective, Recovery Dharma, or declaring independence, or dissolution, etc. To that end, I strongly encourage you to:
All listed above is also available on this website's Resources page. More will soon follow including meeting formats, and worksheets for Noble Truth and Eightfold Path Inquiry work. Living in impermanence, we see death and rebirth. Buddha, Dharma, Sangha. ![]()

“Here is the difference between Dante, Milton, and me. They wrote about hell and never saw the place. I wrote about Chicago after looking the town over for years and years.” -Carl Sandburg
Arrived yesterday morning was was lucking enough to take The Architects Tour on the Chicago River. Highly recommend. This evening after the opening remarks by Jean Tull, I've been asked to lead the opening meditation. Leaning towards the equanimity meditation. The rest of the conference agenda proves to chock full of snap, crackle, and pop especially as, [surprise!] Noah Levine has been added at a participant in the two hour State of the State plenary discussion. Because, as those of you who have attending meeting in the last week are aware, Refuge Recovery, the existing registered nonprofit, will be no more by August 1. It it's place [I'm tempted to write "arising from it ashes" - which might be a bit melodramatic but Phoenicians are, of course, partial to that metaphor] will be to new organizations as alluded to in the JOINT STATEMENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF REFUGE RECOVERY AND NOAH LEVINE ET AL. See the complete legal agreement here. While Refuge Recovery's main FB page has no mention of the upcoming split, discussion has been fast and furious on both Refuge Recovery's closed group page - which will be turned over to one of the new organization's, Noah Levine's Refuge Recovery Word Service [RRWS] - and the group page of the other, Recovery Dharma Recovery Dharma already has some exciting initial literature including [in draft form] The Dharma of Recovery: Using Buddhist Practice and Principles to End the Suffering of Addiction and suggested meeting script, format, etc. More will be sure to come. I'll keep you posted. Hello Sangha,
As Valley Hope Tempe will be closed for Independence Day, this Thursday, July 4th, there will be no Refuge Meeting that night. Wishing you a peaceful celebration and consideration of our ideal, a home of the brave and land of the free. |
